ODE TO THE HUMBLE CUPCAKE

Oh cupcake, dear cupcake

I love you, divine

I love you so much I wish you were mine

It may not be entirely appropriate and seemly to still eat cupcakes at 45 years old but my fondest birthday memories are associated with cupcakes.

Making them, sucking in the smell of them as they bake, eating them without icing, twisting myself in knots, pacing, jumping on the spot, waiting for them to cool down so they could be eatenย  with icing.

Chocolate, butterfly, cinnamon and coffee, brandy butter cream.

Ginger lemon, coconut, triple chocolate, vanilla dream.

Apple-oat, banana, peanut butter, orange delight

Oh, I could eat the humble cupcake long into the night.

If Marie Antoinette had said:ย  Let them eat cupcakes, the people of Paris might not have stormed the Bastille.

I ate three tiny parcels of cakey goodness today in a cafe and no one blinked. They didn’t think it odd that a grown woman should be munching on a small cake baked in a cup-shaped container.

They must have known it was my birthday.

  1. Happy Birthday, Selma. You scoff as many cupcakes as you wish (well, they are called Fairy Cakes here).

    Have a wonderful day.

  2. There’s no better way to spend a birthday, and a happy one to you! But have you noticed how our beloved little cakes from childhood are now THE thing? They’re everywhere, even with entire shops dedicated just to them. Isn’t it marvelous?

  6. And Happy Birthday from another cupcake devotee! I personally love the little ones they call “two-bite” cupcakes I find in our grocery stores here. But there are also some shops here that make luscious, velvety, gourmet cupcakes that are just amazing! You will have to come visit Seattle and we will treat you to some of these confections in a late birthday celebration! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi ONE OF THE GUYS:
Cupcakes are just so cheery. I think that’s why I like them so much. They elicit such a happy response.

    Hi RELUCS:
Of course. I used to call them fairy cakes when I was little. OMG, I’ve been Australianised ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

    Hi SUE:
It’s true. In the city near my husband’s work there are four cupcake stores. I had no idea there were so many. There is also this cute store in our local shopping mall called Babycakes. It sells these teeny tiny cupcakes that are almost too cute to eat. It’s like something out of Alice in Wonderland.

    Hi JENNIFER:
    Awww. You are a sweetie!

    Hi SUSANNAH:
You are so right. Cupcakes transcend age with their deliciousness. Mmmmm.

    Hi SINGER:
I had a lovely day. Not only were there cupcakes, the weather was glorious.

    Hi ROWE:
I saw one that looked like an ice cream sundae. It even had a cherry on the top. It was gorgeous!

    Hi DAOINE:
Keep the cupcakes flowing and the smiles keep growing….now I’m just getting silly. Must be all that sugar!

I would love to visit Seattle. It is on my wish list. I love everything about it. One day I will get there and we will enjoy some cupcakes together. I am very keen to try the red velvet flavour. That looks heavenly. Mmmmmm.

  9. Happy Birthday, sweetie! mmm, cupcakes! I like them better than regular cake.

Spawn has been working on perfecting the cupcake, and goodness, she’s come up with some amazing delights. There’s the chocolate one she fills with a rich chocolate ganache and frosts with a fudge concoction that makes me swoon. Swoon.

When you come to Seattle, I’ll be sure to have her bake some for us.

  10. Happy (belated) birthday, Selma!

Thing about cupcakes (fairy cakes) is they MUST be home-made. Shop-bought ones just don’t cut it … even ‘Mr. Kipling’s’ (although, as most of us know, he does make ‘exceedingly good cakes’)

For me that is one of the perks of being a parent–the kids want cupcakes and I get to sample them without shame.

    Hi MELEAH:
Your son and I share a birthday. I always knew he was a cool kid ๐Ÿ˜€

    Hi TRAVELRAT:
I agree although our local Michel’s Patisserie does a delectable pink frosting cupcake that is very good. I should know, I’ve eaten about 200 of them!

    Hi BEAR:
Awww. So nice to hear from you and Butch. And yes, that spot you are in is a gorgeous one!

Well, that is just brilliant. Taureans should rule the world. We would really sort everything out. Until that happens we’ll just have to eat cupcakes!

    *blush*

No wonder we get along so well! Mine is on Friday. ๐Ÿ˜€

Well, I hope you had as many cupcakes as you wanted – you’re due. And age has nothing to do with it… I’ll be eating cupcakes well into my 90’s… that is if my rotten younger siblings don’t beat me to the table! LOL!!!

(The ginger and lemon sound soooo good. Maybe I should put an order in with Redbeard?)
