I saw this pelican sitting on a lampost at the Fish Markets and it gave me such a thrill to see him there. He was magnificent and just a little bit regal.
He spent ages preening himself then looked around at the world below him with a satisfied look on his face as if to say : Behold! My Kingdom. My kingdom…..
He was a very large bird but all in all I could tell he was a gentle fellow.
It made my day to see him.
what a magnificent bird, lovely photo

I was actually afraid of pelicans, as a child. Maybe I thought they’d take me back. π Now, I agree with you, they are regal. Thanks for sharing this one with us and have a great weekend.

Awesome photo! Thanks for the comments Selma π It’s a little funny how after several false starts I got going again… Blogging after so long feels a oddly awkward!
Geraldine, I used to be afraid of pelicans too. The pelicans I was used to seeing were these huge (to me) brown things that always seemed to have flopping fish wiggling in their pouches. Ugh!

Wonderful photo – they would be my favourite bird the pelican (‘its beak can hold more than its belly can’) and I’ve never been afraid of them – never heard of them hurting a person. Here they hand around people fishing, hoping for some food – I love when they land on the water like a seaplane – skidding to a stop with both feet in front (wouldn’t that be fun – haha).

Gorgeous photo of the fellow! Just yesterday I saw a Great Blue Heron – and thought him to be regal too – I wonder if these birds on opposite ends of the world are somehow related…

Hi CRAFTY GREEN:
Isn’t he gorgeous? Look how fluffy he is. A prize specimen, indeed!
Hi GERALDINE:
It is understandable to be scared of pelicans as a child – they are very big birds. And those beaks are a bit intimidating. I was scared of crows when I was little but I don’t mind them now.
Hi LUA:
Awww. I’m glad. He is a cutie!
Hi LAURA:
I am so glad you’re back. I really missed you. I know what you mean about the fish in the pouches – it is a little offputting. Once again – so glad you’re back!
Hi GABRIELLE:
I love them too. They are character birds. And they do land like seaplanes. What a fabulous observation!
Hi JENNIFER:
I would love to see a Great Blue Heron. I would be so excited. WOW. What a moment. It is quite possible they are related – in royal manner, if nothing else!
Hi TRAVELRAT:
You can never have too many pics of pelicans. They are very photogenic!
Hi WENDY:
Awww. I am so glad I made you smile. That makes me feel good!
