Gentle Fellow

I saw this pelican sitting on a lampost at the Fish Markets and it gave me such a thrill to see him there. He was magnificent and just a little bit regal.

He spent ages preening himself then looked around at the world below him with a satisfied look on his face as if to say : Behold! My Kingdom. My kingdom…..

He was a very large bird but all in all I could tell he was a gentle fellow.

It made my day to see him.

  1. I was actually afraid of pelicans, as a child. Maybe I thought they’d take me back. πŸ˜‰ Now, I agree with you, they are regal. Thanks for sharing this one with us and have a great weekend.

  2. Wow- you captured a great picture Selma! He looks so proud but yes- gentle as well! Thank you for sharing this, it made my day too πŸ™‚

  3. Awesome photo! Thanks for the comments Selma πŸ™‚ It’s a little funny how after several false starts I got going again… Blogging after so long feels a oddly awkward!

Geraldine, I used to be afraid of pelicans too. The pelicans I was used to seeing were these huge (to me) brown things that always seemed to have flopping fish wiggling in their pouches. Ugh!

  4. Wonderful photo – they would be my favourite bird the pelican (‘its beak can hold more than its belly can’) and I’ve never been afraid of them – never heard of them hurting a person. Here they hand around people fishing, hoping for some food – I love when they land on the water like a seaplane – skidding to a stop with both feet in front (wouldn’t that be fun – haha).

  5. Gorgeous photo of the fellow! Just yesterday I saw a Great Blue Heron – and thought him to be regal too – I wonder if these birds on opposite ends of the world are somehow related…

  6. I got some more pelican pictures at Seaworld the other day . Betwwen us, we’re getting quite a collection.

  7. My goodness, there goes my gloomy mood! It’s not the first time one of your posts has forced me to smile. Thanks again Selma.

Isn’t he gorgeous? Look how fluffy he is. A prize specimen, indeed!

It is understandable to be scared of pelicans as a child – they are very big birds. And those beaks are a bit intimidating. I was scared of crows when I was little but I don’t mind them now.

    Hi LUA:
Awww. I’m glad. He is a cutie!

    Hi LAURA:
I am so glad you’re back. I really missed you. I know what you mean about the fish in the pouches – it is a little offputting. Once again – so glad you’re back!

I love them too. They are character birds. And they do land like seaplanes. What a fabulous observation!

I would love to see a Great Blue Heron. I would be so excited. WOW. What a moment. It is quite possible they are related – in royal manner, if nothing else!

You can never have too many pics of pelicans. They are very photogenic!

    Hi WENDY:
Awww. I am so glad I made you smile. That makes me feel good!
