And They Said It Would Never Last

Da da dah dahhhhh.

Drumroll, please.

It is my three year blogiversary today.

Thank you to all my wonderful readers.

I have put a video on YouTube (my first ever) to thank you in person.

Now you can see that I am a real person not a bot generated from deep within the matrix.

I apologise for the quality of the video. It was recorded on Quicktime which I won’t use next time. I’ll actually get out the digital video camera.

Sorry for the lags. And the fact that when they occur I appear to have had too many Cosmopolitans. I have only been drinking Diet Coke today, I promise.

Sorry for the fact that I actually said crapola. And for the sight of my ironing board in the background. It is hard being a blogger as well as a domestic goddess.

Here it is.

Thank you everybody.

You are EPIC!!!!!

  1. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I really enjoyed watching the movie and I want to thank you for your blog, for all the stories and your personal observations, memories, emotions and insights that you share with your readers. I assure you it has been a very enriching and enjoyable experience for me. I’m truly happy to have found your blog! Thank you, Selma. Keep daring!

  2. Oh that was wonderful. I’m so glad you did that. It was so nice to actually see you, like you were in my room and to hear your voice. I was feeling a bit glum about the rubbish weather and that was like a blast of sunshine into my house.

And your accent – it is amazing. You do indeed still have a huge dollop of Scots in there, don’t you? What a wonderful combination. Love it.

And CONGRATULATIONS! It’s hard sometimes, isn’t it, to keep going? I struggle sometimes. Bit it’s always worth it. Well, it’s definitely always worth it for me as a reader but as a blog-writer it is hard sometimes.

  5. Hi SHIONA:
Awww. Thank you so much. I do feel it was a bit daring for me to do a video. A little out of my comfort zone, but I did enjoy it. What you have just said is what blogging’s all about for me. πŸ˜€

    Hi RELUCS:
It definitely is a weird, hybrid accent. I have a Toyota Prius accent. I’m eco-friendly with every word πŸ˜†
A lot of people ask me if I’m Canadian and I did have one guy ask me once if I was Swedish. Nudge nudge wink wink.

It has been hard to keep going with the blog on occasion. It’s not that the ideas for posts are gone, it’s just the process of writing them up and so on when there are so many other things to do, is hard. But I’ll keep blogging for as long as I can. I do enjoy it!

    Hi RACHEL:
It is an odd experience to see someone materialise, so to speak. It’s kind of like when you meet the partner of a friend and you’ve only ever heard about them, not met them. It’s good to put a face to the name. Great to meet you again too!

    Hi TRAVELRAT:
I am surprised it’s been 3 years too. I know you started your blog shortly before I did. It is amazing how quickly time has flown by. Thank you for being just about my most loyal and longstanding reader. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it. And yes, I should do a doco. No doubt I’ll come across a subject that’ll fire me up!

  6. Hi VIC:
I love a good singalong. As long as it’s done with gusto, it doesn’t matter about the voice. Please feel free to indulge in your favourite tune!

    HI JENNIFER:
I think that is a fantastic idea. Every blogger should give it a try. I was completely unscripted. You find you just blab away. I talk to myself anyway so it was just business as usual. I am so glad you didn’t experience any lagging. It was probably just the old Sydney servers playing up again!

    Hi LISSA:
The ironing board is a fixture in that room mainly because it is so old and doesn’t fold up properly. So I tell everyone I love to iron….

You are a total sweetie too. It has been such a pleasure to get to know you on the net.

  7. Three years and still going strong – I salute you! You never seem to lack inspiration (unlike me who goes for weeks at a time saying nothing). It was lovely to put a voice to the words. Happy bloganniversary xx PS I’m just back from your neck of the woods – a month in and around Brisbane. OK, so not quite Sydney, but closer than Bahrain!

Aww. You are so kind to say that. But truly, it has been a pleasure for me too. Very much β™₯

    Hi KATE:
I have had times where I haven’t blogged consistently for months too. There is definitely an ebb and flow to it. I am so excited to hear you were in Oz. I hope you write about your trip on your blog. Brisbane is lovely this time of year and much closer than Bahrain!

  9. How special this was to watch. What a cutie you are Sel! It was so nice to hear your voice finally. Your physical voice that is. Your heart voice, that we have been enjoying month after month. And I do agree, some of the best people I’ve met in a long time, and truly feel close to, are those online. You are certainly one of the best! That’ s probably why I head over here pronto, whenever I’m online blogging. Seeing whats new in your world, makes my day. When you are having a tough day, I feel for you and always send hugs and good vibes and wish for things to clear up soon. I hope you feel that coming from me…

Thanks for 3 wonderful years and congrats! Hugs a plenty, G

  10. There she is! I finally get to see our darling Selma and here her voice. Yeah, I get the ‘Scot’ in your accent and having 7 Scottish cousins in my family I can make compare.

Congrats on 3 years and I am looking forward to many more years from you and your blog. Enjoyed reading all your posts and hope you keep em coming.

    Love & hugs

I know exactly what you mean about the friendships online. I treasure you and your support and talent and silliness and PERSON every day.

    Yay, Selma!!! Woohooo!!!! You ROCK!

Aww. Thank you. I was a bit nervous about doing it, but you know, sometimes you’ve just got to do these things. It actually was a lot of fun. My son got into it too and couldn’t wait to be the first one to leave a comment on YouTube. ‘Epic Fail, Mum.’ That’s what he said. When I get an epic fail from him I feel proud. It might just mean there’s still a bit of cool in the old gal yet. Love you.

    Hi TIPOTA:
Thanks for the smooches. Right back at ya XXX

    Hi GERALDINE:
I feel the same way about you. There is definitely a connection there. In so many ways we are on the same wavelength. It’s brilliant to have met you. β™₯

    Hi ROSHAN:
I know you have that Scottish connection in the family, although I would hazard a guess their accents are much thicker than mine and that they can say my favourite Glaswegian phrase with the right accent, that is – ‘What are you lookin’ at pal?’ It’s got to have just the right touch of menace.

I’ll be around in the blogosphere for a bit longer, I suspect. Hope you will be too!

    Hi HEATHER:
That is the real me. The silliness. The accents. The crazy voices. It’s a carnival in my head, I tell you. The way I look at it is – you gotta have a laugh. Every day. Otherwise, what’s the point. I cannot tell you what your friendship has meant to me, Heather. You are so dear to me. I thank the powers that be every day we met XXX

  14. I too Loved your vid !
To hear your speak was an extra special treat. The one downside to blogging is that we often don’t have a face or a voice to put with the words and the personas that we come to know as our electric friends. I whole heartedly agree with you that our online friendships can and are as valuable and real as any that we have “in the flesh”

This November I will be coming up for my five year anniversary but I don’t know if I would be brave enough to post a vid like yours though πŸ˜‰

    Love your accent too !

  15. Hi Selma,
I’m relatively new to the blogging world, but I agree it’s a lot of fun, and it’s nice to see a real person as well. Love your accent and it suits you as well. There was no lags at all when I played the video, very nicely done, and fun as well. Congrats on your 3 years.

  16. Hi STEPH:
It has often been said that I live my life as if I am an extra in an Austin Powers movie. Sad, but true. At least there are lots of silly moments. I feel that we will meet one day too. You are my sister far across the sea – the one I could have had if we were able to pick our sisters. And I so, so want to see Chicago. So don’t move anytime soon so you can take me to all the best sights!!

    Hi IAIN:
Five years is a huge achievement. Congratulations. It’s not easy to do. You should be pleased to have done that. It is nice to see someone for real. It just rounds them out a little more. I am pleased I have had such a good response to the vid. The only ‘epic fail’ I got was from Nick and I wear that like a badge of honour!

    Hi MAGSx2:
Lovely to meet you and welcome to the blogosphere. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. There have been two major bonuses for me.
    1. I think I have become a better writer so it has been like a free creative writing course (with my poor readers having to suffer through my initial efforts)
    2. The friendships. I never expected that. They are real and they are awesome.
I hope you get as much out of blogging as I have!

I agree with everything you said about virtual friends – people who don’t blog find it hard to understand, fair enough but they are the ones missing out. Here’s to another 3 years and more. Fun, fun, fun.

I think non-bloggers are definitely missing out. It is so much fun to blog. I couldn’t do without it now. Don’t encourage me in the comedian stakes. Next I’ll be doing a vid of all my ‘Knock Knock’ jokes complete with sound affects. πŸ˜†

    Hi ROWE:
I was sad to see you are stopping blogging but I do understand how time consuming it can be. It is really good for me mentally, so I will stick with it for as long as I can. I am delighted you popped in today. If you are ever down near the Sydney CBD let me know and maybe we can have a coffee. Great to hear from you!

    Congratulations! Love ya.

PS. I’m planning a little video for my course promo, so you might get to see me soon too. I’m nervous as hell about it, though.

I am sure we will meet one day soon. I would really like that. I take my ironing board everywhere and if I happen to stay somewhere where there isn’t an ironing board left up permanently in a room I will find one and put one up πŸ˜†

Don’t be nervous. You totally know what you are talking about. You will be brilliant!

  24. Selma, I love this! I am still grinning because you are funny! πŸ™‚ Thanks for taking the time to do this. I so agree that you can become friends with people without ever meeting them in the flesh. Frankly, sometimes it’s EASIER to make friends with people in cyberspace than in real life.

Oh, absolutely. In many ways it is easier because you sort of get to the essence of the person more quickly. It can be quite a pure interaction. I love that aspect of it. So glad you liked my silliness πŸ˜€

Like you, I feel so darn blessed by stumbling into this wonderful supportive world. And my life is far more enhanced and enlightened because of the connection I feel so strongly with you. you know Selma, I just always felt like you understood me, and I understood you.
GREAT idea for your bloggie anniversary. I may have to do the same in Sept. for my fifth anniversary. Will ask the kiddies to help me. Maybe I’ll sing! ahhahaaa!

I may not comment as often as I would like to but I do still read your blog all the time! You are the first thing I check when I’m online. I love how you have become a great friend and have given me some great laughs here on your blog when I needed it the most! I seriously have to get back to blogging, there is so much i have to say but I can’t seem to find the time but I am updating Project 365 and am so happy when i see that you had stopped by and commented. This week-end I will give it a blitz and let you know when I am completely up to date!

It means a great deal to me that you should say that. I feel a connection to you too. It is hard to put it into words but I guess what it comes down to is that I know that you KNOW (if you know what I mean?) You get the bigger picture and I can relate. You often remind me of what the bigger picture is. I feel blessed to have met you.

I will look forward to your video. That would be so much fun. And if you feel the urge to sing, go for it. It will be brilliant!

    HI TBALL:
Thanks for your comment on YouTube. You are awesome. Hey, there is no need to ever comment. I am just glad you are reading. You have become such a great friend to me. Even Nick often says: ‘I wonder how TBall is going.’ He was very worried about you when you were ill. See what blogging can do? It gives you friends all over the world!
