One Word

This is the rear of an Artist’s studio a few streets over from where I live.

Lately, I have taken to walking as twilight fades to night and I don’t know if I am suddenly prone to fanciful thoughts or if my vision is impaired from too much TV and internet usage. Or even if in the early dark of night it is possible to walk halfway between reality and imagining.

But when I see this door with the enormous paintbrush and the starlight is shining on it and the moonlight is shining on it, it looks as if I could pluck it right from the door.  And if I was strong enough to hold it, to wield it, I could use the buildings and the trees and the sky as my canvas.

And wielding it, if I dared, would be a huge responsibility. It would be like wielding Excalibur itself. Full of wisdom and power and might.

And possibly the ability to change the world.

Surely if such a thing could happen then the person who owned the brush, who used the brush would come after me like the giant after Jack when he grabbed the goose that laid the golden egg.

So I would have to be quick with my painting. I would need to paint something memorable and meaningful before the person to whom the brush belonged (quite possibly a giant) exploded through the studio door shouting: Who is using my magic brush?

The trouble is, I am not a painter. I have no talent for perspective or form. Even my stick figures are unrecognisable.

So all I could do with that brush would be to write a word. And I would only have time for one word. Which word to choose? Which word would appeal to many and actually mean something?

I could consider – LOVE.

I could consider – HOPE.

I could consider – BELIEVE.

KINDNESS could do.

So could JOY.

But in the end there is only one word which holds a little bit of all those other words and leads to so many others.

Only one.

  1. A wonderful post!:<) I LOVE that wall art Sel, no wonder you were inspired to pick up a paintbrush. You should try painting, it is one of the most relaxing and creative forms of crafting that I have ever tried. I can't wait to have a spot to set up an easel again soon.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend, G

Oh, yeeheehaaaa. I don’t know about you but when I see someone smile or read the word smile I just well, smile. It’s a good thing 😀 😀

    Hi SUSANNAH:
Fabulous. I wasn’t sure what ‘one word’ to write until I actually wrote it but ‘smile actually slotted in there without me noticing. It is one of my favourite words!

    Hi GERALDINE:
I can’t paint, Geraldine. I have no artistic talent whatsoever. But I do love to watch people paint and greatly admire painters. Such an amazing thing to be able to do. Have a brilliant weekend!!

    Hi DEBORAH:
The Cheshire Cat has one of the best smiles ever, hasn’t he? I can’t help but grin when I see him. In the right light it is so easy to believe that paintbrush on the door is real. It gives me a little thrill every time I see it!

  4. Methinks in a world so full of sorrow and travail a smile might not be enough. I’ve squeezed out a smile or two through tears.

I guess what I’m sayin’ is…I’d kinda like to LAUGH.

But, hey, that’s just me. And, for the record, I simply can’t help but smile knowing you’re here on this earth.

  5. Yes, good choice! I’d have chosen THINK

(Then I thought of a plaque someone once sent me, which hung in my office for ages:

‘Before you foul things up, THIMK!’)

  6. Hi GABRIELLE:
I think I read too many fairytales as a kid. They are ingrained in my brain. I reference them all the time. It is a cool door. Makes me happy whenever I walk by.

    Hi JONAS:
You are right. To laugh is more desirable, for sure. Hopefully, a smile will lead to laughter. A thing that would make you laugh, however, would be my attempts to paint. Hilarious, really.

I smile knowing you are there too. You make a difference.

    Hi TRAVELRAT:
Think is such a good one. I love it. That plaque is too funny *chortle*

  8. Like you Selma, I have no talent for anything artistic, I just admire the works that talented people do.
We have a lot of graffiti in Toronto and some of it is amazing but I’ll never forget a painting I once saw in a gallery out here where we live, It was at night that I noticed it and the light in the studio combined with the street lights and moon made it appear that you could pluck the flowers in the painting right off the canvas! It was incredible, I’ve never seen anything like it again but I won’t forget it!
It reminded me of spring and flowers blooming and it made me happy.
