Thoughts Of Rain

Rain on glass, forever fascinating. Makes me remember days spent by windows watching the city washed clean.

The rain highlights the magic show of light and shadow that fills up the world.

Apostrophes; clear, yet fully formed.

A lot of people experience the stirring of memories when it rains. Sweet and sour. It’s even in a song –

I can’t stand the rain against my window

bringing back sweet memories

Hey, window pane, do you remember

How sweet it used to be? *

I remember three people who walked away in the rain, their umbrellas cutting through the wind and the water, visible long after the bodies that held them had turned to smoke.

I remember three people who walked away in the rain but I don’t remember three people who walked back.

So many endings in the rain. So many days of moving and distance. The rain takes us to different places the sunlight cannot.

The rain falls in fringes, casting jagged reflections. The streets are opaque. We move slowly along them, our shoes glistening.

We are never still in the rain. It is fingers on our shoulders propelling us. We walk on water and asphalt and glass, fugitives from our own stories.

We remember the smell of it. We remember the taste of it. We remember so many things so well because it rinses the air clean. We dive headfirst into it, our paths blackened but defined.

It falls, dropping beneath chimneys and sweeps of red roofs and white letters on shop signs. Falling like trailing twigs from trees.

And suddenly our hearts, full of weariness and dust, are washed clean, glinting, unmarked. And we remember all the things we love.

* Lyrics from I Can’t Stand The Rain written by Don Bryant, Bernie Miller and Ann Peebles (1973)

  1. Now that’s poetry Selma 🙂 ‘It is fingers on our shoulders propelling us. We walk on water and asphalt and glass, fugitives from our own stories.’ – wonderful. I love being in bed, snuggled up under a doonah, listening to the rain – hate being out and about driving in it.

  2. MELEAH – I love that song. I haven’t heard it before but it is really cool. Thanks for including it. I like the rain too but for some reason it made me melancholy yesterday. I just saw all these people walking away with their umbrellas and it made me a little blue. I don’t know why. I am going to go and listen to that song again!

OURNOTE2SELF – I love doing that too. It is one of my favourite things. Thanks for stopping by. Nice to meet you!

GABRIELLE – You are far too kind to me. I do love poetry so much. Hey, maybe one day I’ll be able to write it. And yeah, driving in rain is no fun, especially in Sydney. The drivers here lose their cotton-picking minds in the rain. It’s crazy!

  3. Hi Selma,
I love the rain, not the real heavy rain, but soft rain. In summer I love to go out and walk in the rain, every thing seems so much cleaner and fresher, and it is a beautiful way to cool down after a hot day. I also love listening to the rain at night, there is something about laying in bed and listening to the rain, it seems to be very soothing in some way.

  4. Hi Sel, I am just testing the waters of blogging by visiting a few of my faves to see if it’s something I want to do again. We’ll see.

I’m one of those freaky people who loves to walk in the rain. Many a time I have continued to garden when it is bucketing down and I wonder why people think I’m just a tiny bit crazy 🙂

  5. MAGS – Soft rain is the best. We have had a deluge here over the last few days. In a way it is fabulous – my grass is so green. It was half dead before. And you’re right – lying in bed listening to the rain is so soothing. There’s nothing like it!

  6. GYPSY!!!! GYPSY!!!! Is that really you? You won’t believe it – Nick and I were thinking about you the other day and wondered how you were. Whenever we see a story about Adelaide on the news we think of you. OMG. I am so excited and delighted right now. The blogging world just isn’t the same without you – it would make my year if you came back to it. I have missed you so much. I hope you have been well. I could cry right now I am so happy to see you 😀 😀 ♥♡☺✓♦ YAYAYAYAY 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

  7. How wonderful you write! I love the rain, I truly do. I love how it makes everything shine and the sound the cars go as they woosh in puddles, the lullaby of it on the roof when i’m lying on the big comfy couch. But too much rain is just that, too much, so much so that everything drowns. Today was the first day of winter, it was a perfect sunny, chilly day in Melb, and I thought of all the rain in the other states, and hoped it turned out to be just another rainy day where the worst that goes wrong is umbrellas left on the train.

  8. I love the rain and I loved this post!

I kept thinking about the Gordie Lightfoot line: ” I spent most of my life outside, in the pouring rain” as I read this. So many people hate the rain it seems but it’s all in how you look at it, isn’t it? And rain is an element/topic you can study for a long, long time.

  9. PS: That line should read: driving rain. From Can’t Depend on Love. I am still a huge Gordie fan, he is a Canadian legion that just goes on and on performing!

I left a comment reply on my post/poem Summer Wishes… in reply to yours. You might find this one kind of interesting, if you have time to stop by again at :

  10. LILY – It is such an honour to be visited by you. I am totally excited now. I love the rain too but as you say when it is too much it can cause many problems. I have found many umbrellas on trains and buses and I always make up stories about the people who owned them. It’s fun. So great to see you!

  11. GERALDINE – LOVE THAT LIGHTFOOT LINE. I want to write a story about it, it is so fantastic. I never hate the rain but sometimes it makes me feel a little blue. It is an endless source of fascination for me. I could spend the whole day watching it.

I’ve just replied to your comment back over at your blog. Interesting about Joanne Woodward. Ten-four!
