You Can’t Stop ‘Em

Our esteemed (cough cough) leader of the Opposition, Tony Abbott, is always going on about stopping the boats. (For the many non-Australians who read my blog – thank you, by the way – stopping the boats was part of Mr. Abbott’s campaign when running for Prime Minister and refers to stopping asylum seekers from places like Indonesia entering the country illegally on ricketty, old, barely seaworthy boats.)

The stop the boats campaign is now like a broken record and I just want Mr. Abbott to know that I predict as a die hard boat lover he will never ever stop the boats; especially if the activity in my local bay is anything to go by.

Boats, glorious boats. You just can’t stop ’em.

  1. This reminds me of when so many people took to their boats and crossed 90 miles of sea to escape the tyranny of the Castro regime in Cuba. I lived in south Florida at the time, and I housed a little Cuban refugee who had made the journey with 12 people in a small open boat. His name was Chico and he was the cutest little dog you ever saw.

    1. My friends and I were talking the other day about how many boats use the Harbour and bays in Sydney. The joint is jumpin.’ I suppose it must be the same for most harbours around the world. I love it – lots of great sights to see!

    1. Sometimes it is indeed best to just talk about the weather 😉
What surprises me is the number of different boats there are. I suppose peopole can get them customised with certain features and styles etc. There really are some nice ones out there!

    1. Yes, Bluebee, I am up on the mast flinging out barbs both metaphorical and actual. Hahaha. I love the Harbour too.
What do we want? More boats.
When do we want ’em? NOW!

    1. You busted me, Cathy. This post has got nothing to do with politics at all, it is just my poorly-concealed way of once again going on about boats. I am trying to hide the fact I am obsessed by making fun of a man who probably loves his Mum and helps old ladies across the road. I should just have come clean to begin with 😆 😆 😆

  5. Hehehehehe 😉 You have a lot of boat pictures Selma (wonderful boat pictures). Stop the boats, stop the carbon tax, stop the pokies reform going through – wtf – just Stop Tony Abbott and we can all move forward as a nation. He is the worst Opposition leader we have ever had (that is just for the record – haha). Thanks Selma.

    1. I have a boat picture for every time Tony Abbott says ‘We’re gonna stop the boats!’ My external hard drive is full and it has 60GB (only partly joking….) I figure that if I take a photo of a boat every time he says it a kitten or a baby angel won’t die.

I agree with you completely as you know. Even my hard core right wing friends can’t stand him. I have a friend who lives in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. She is posh and rich and has voted for the Coalition all her life. This is a direct quote from her – ‘How any reasonable, intelligent, responsible person can vote for that buffoon Tony Abbott is beyond me. On a global scale he appears ignorant, opinionated and is more fond of pontificating than formulating workable policy.’
      A to the MEN SISTAH!!!

Stop the boats? You mean, no more ‘Murray Princess’, ‘Nepean Belle’, ‘Bounty’, ‘Reef Magic II’, ‘Spirit of Migaloo’ … etc, etc ? 😀

  7. Forget the Nanny State, we have a Pappy State. We (as a mob) want a leader who does not bother us with the why’s and the wherefores, but appears strong and just gets on with it.
That’s why we loved Howard so much. He declared war on a nation that not only was no threat to us but was a major trading partner, Iraq with no consultation, except with his best mate Goerge Bush.
He declared nobody would come to this country unless ‘we decided who and by what means’. He appealed to our distrust of foreigners by demonising a small, defenceless and easily identified group, projecting their image as potential terrorists, when they were the least likely group to be so. He lied again to win an election, telling us they were animals who threw their children overboard. He scared the pants off us with the impression we were about to be swamped by Al Qaida operatives. Then he let us know he was anti Muslim by inserting exclusively Christian chaplains into (secular public schools to attract the those right wing Christians like the Exclusive Brethren he hadn’t already gotten on side.
Abbott sees himself as the next Prime Minister and admits Howard is his mentor. To win, like his mentor, he will lie, destroy and scaremonger.
One scary part is that he gets weekly advice from George Pell, Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne, who mighht just have a bit of religious bias but the scaries part of all is that he is odds on to win. He has set a new low standard for political expediency and will destroy necessary reforms and furhter isolate us from world trends on climate change and any cooperative efforts on overpopulation, food security, the environment, you name it.
I suspect, like many other extreme Christians, he believes the Biblical myth of a second coming and the that the world is about to retire (to quote Phillp Adams) so it’s OK to pollute, exploit and leave sinners (like gamblers) to suffer while subsidising foreign owned mining companies and refusing to adequately tax their access to our (expendable) mineral wealth for community benefit. It’s also OK to demonise non Christians, because they aren’t coming to live forever in Heaven anyway.
Any Climate Change scientist will tell you that the world will go on, no matter what. But we will not be there. We willl however, leave the most complete fossil record of any extinct species. The irony is, there will be no species with the skill or need left alive to read it.
His ignorance of science and his ridicule of scientists shows he doesn’t believe humans are subject to the same natural laws as wiped out the dinosaurs and the hairy mamouth and explains his opposition to environmental reform.
Unfortunately Selma, we are very much the minority but we have to try to get the merssage our as you do. A vote for Abbott is a vote for an inequitable and violent future as we squabble ove the last drops of oil and scoop of coal.
As we should point out to our Christian freinds who are so fervent in their support, Matthew wrote in verse 7. By their fruits (works) ye shall know them!’ Jesus Christ would not have approved of Tony Abbott.

    1. I was hoping you’d comment, Stafford. I agree 100% with everything you’ve said except for one thing – I’m not convinced Abbott will ever make it as PM. It’s just a feeling I can’t really explain (maybe it’s denial) but I just don’t see it.

I sometimes despair at the ignorant attitude expressed by many Christian groups, but in particular the Catholics. Cardinal Pell and his hypocrisy is one of the reasons I no longer consider myself a Catholic. If you read anything about Jesus Christ – anything at all – you could not deny what a humanitarian he was, how much he loved and looked out for the underprivileged and how compassionate he was. What always gets to me is that the way Christ actually was directly contradicts the way he is painted and presented by groups like the CAtholic Church. Nothing gets on my goat more than when a bigoted, prejudiced view is presented ‘in Jesus’ name.’ Such a view would have been anathema to Jesus.

THe Catholic Church is all about money and power and guilt. Nothing more. The Pope was in the Hitler Youth, for God’s sake. That says it all. If heaven and hell actually does exist the old place of fire and brimstone must be pretty much choc a block full of Catholics at the moment.

~ JESUS CHRIST WOULD NOT HAVE APPROVED OF TONY ABBOTT ~
that is the quote of the week.
      Love you, Stafford xx

  8. My parents came to the US semi-illegally on big boats after barely managing to stay alive in Nazi concentration camps. If they had done everything “by the book” I’d surely not be an American now, I’d surely never have helped all the traumatized patients I see in psychotherapy, I’d never had the privilege to attend Harvard, and, frankly, I would probably never have been born. Fuck those privileged politicians who have no empathy for the suffering of refugees. May they someday experience some of that suffering themselves in another life. Great post. I can’t believe that guy’s motto. How about Stop the Preppies.

    1. I find the refugee issue to be very upsetting, Squirrel. I understand that correct procedure should be followed when it comes to immigration etc. but where is our humanity? To come all that way in a boat that is barely seaworthy only to be turned back or placed in a detention centre for years breaks my heart. It is only by some twist of fate that I am not a refugee. What would I do if nobody cared? And last week there was another suicide in a detention centre. It’s just not good enough on the part of the politicians….

  9. Oh for goodness sake. These politicians and their sound bites. Sound bites mean nothing. They attempt to convey meaning in a concise way. I think we’re all starting to figure out how meaningless they are – wherever we may live in the world. I’m hopeful anyway. In my city, the “illustrious” mayor’s sound bite that helped him win an election – “stop the gravy train” is now seen on all sides of the fence as a silly lie.” (Apparently the “gravy” was US PEOPLE – and our libraries, and our city’s rejuvenation, and our transit system, and our garbage collection…”)

The contradiction you mention first ocurred to me when I was a kid. I am a “lapsed”/”ex” Catholic (I use “lapsed” and “ex” – because I believe once a Catholic always a Catholic in that by the time you are old enough to reject it (Catholicism) it’s too late, the damage is done)…I agree with what you say about Tony Abbot and the Boat policy.

    1. You know, David, it’s so true. I think it is very hard to completely shake the ties of Catholicism – they do bind us tightly. There ae aspects of the faith I like but I can’t handle the judgement and the whole imposition of guilt thing. It seems hypocritical to me.

With Tony Abbott – I just feel he is focussing too much on something which is important but not as important as fixing up our domestic economy. Of course, a country needs a legitimate immigration policy – I completely agree with that – but our stance on refugees seems particularly inhumane. Have a heart, Tony. Have a heart.
