The Return Of The One-Legged Blogger

Hello everyone. Just wanted to let you know I am still here. I am sorry if I worried anyone by my sudden disappearance. I had an accident and was in hospital for 2 weeks. I fell off a wall (6 foot drop.) The reason I fell off the wall was that it was crumbling and I didn’t realise. I got lots of scrapes and bumps from the fall but the real damage was done when I landed on a piece of sandstone sticking up like a spear that had fallen off the crumbling wall.

The sandstone pierced through my right shin right down to the bone. It was like a scene from a horror movie. I landed on the ground on my right side all disoriented, thinking: ‘Oh great, I’ve got concussion’ and when I straightened myself up saw the sandstone sticking out of my leg and nearly fainted.

Then an unbelievable and very grisly thing happened – I pulled the sandstone out of my leg and walked home. I think I was in shock because I felt no pain at all.

My husband took me to the ER and I thought they’d just be able to stitch my leg up but it was so deep they needed to operate and do a skin graft. I was in hospital for 12 days. Boy, do I have some stories to tell you.

The good news is I am home now and in about a month will be completely healed. I will have no permanent damage but will have a permanent indentation in my leg. A small price to pay I think – I could have landed on my head.

Anyway, I am sorry if I worried any of you. My son left a comment on Twitter and tried to follow it up here but in my addled state I couldn’t remember my password and he couldn’t find the book I have all the passwords written in.

Hope you have all been well. I have missed you and look forward to catching up with you soon.

Much love.

    1. I’m feeling a lot better today. I have a community nurse who is coming round who is an absolute hoot. We have such a laugh. She reckons in two weeks I’ll be completely fine. Amazing how quickly the body heals!

  1. Oh no, Selma – what an nasty thing to happen! Gabe had let me know about your son’s Twitter message but the title of this post gave me a shock, to say the least. Whew, but so glad to hear that you are still in one piece. Hope that you are completely recovered soon. bb xx

    1. It is a bit shocking, I know Bluebee. You know how I lean towards the dramatic. Sorry about that. I’m walking with crutches at the moment so there is a one-legged thing going on. It has made me realise how I took my mobility for granted. It won’t be long, however, until I’m back to my old self. I hope!

  2. goodness gracious, i’m thankful that you are all right! you and humpty dumpty, have something in common now, falling off of walls, but at least all the kings horses and all the kings men did put you back together again.
wishing you a speedy recovery, stay well, many hugs(((((you)))))

    1. I know exactly how old Humpty felt. Haha. I must stay away from walls in future. I still can’t believe I did it. I’ve been walking on that wall for years….

  3. I feel your pain, Selma. I walked of a curb in late April and broke my left ankle in 3 places. I also broke my right foot. I’ve had surgery, spent weeks in the hospital, and am still doing physical therapy.

It’s amazing how fast these accidents happen, how much damage you can do to yourself, and what it takes to recover. I’m so glad you didn’t fall on your head and that you are healing up well. Be careful with yourself!

    1. That sounds awful, Barbara. It must have been extremely painful and does just show you how easily these things can happen. They do happen really quickly. As I was falling I was barely aware it was happening. I am so glad you’re getting better. I wish a continued recovery for both of us xx

    1. So sorry to worry you, Kate. It was hard to get things together with the shock of the accident. The boys found it hard enough to figure out how to use the washing machine let alone do a blog post. I think I’ll need to retrain them. Hahaha.

  4. And here I thought you were out enjoying some lovely springtime weather. Oh, Selma, I’m so glad you’re ok…now, anyway. I’m very thankful that you did not indent your head. Take gentle care of yourself, dear friend and I can’t wait to hear your stories.

I’ve missed you a bunch (and I still wish you’d been out having a lovely spring instead of being injured).

    1. Thank you so much for your kind thoughts, Karen. I do count myself lucky. I saw some horrible scenes in hospital. It has changed my perspective for good. I will never take anything for granted again. I’ve missed you too. So much….

  5. Probably the worst thing about being in hospital for any length of time is that you’re so out of touch … no Internet, and even phone only if you’re prepared to pay an extortionate price for it.

A neighbour recently lost a leg to thrombosis … he was in hosptial for six weeks, and says he felt so impotent without access to his blog and social media … he said:

‘I felt like a one-legged man in an arse-kicking contest!’

We’re still laughing about that one.

Big hug; glad you’re all right!

    1. So sorry to hear about your neighbour. That is awful. Amazing that he has held on to his sense of humour. You do lose touch with things in hospital. I had no idea even what the weather was like outside. It’s like being in a weird alternate universe. Thanks for the hug 😀

  7. Hi Selma,
I am so sorry to hear about your accident. Travelrat was kind enough to let me know that you were in hospital, he seen the twitter from your son.

What an awful experience, it sounds like you were somewhere a bit isolated seeing as how to had to walk home, obviously no one around to help. I get a shiver up my back just thinking about you pulling that piece out of your leg.
2 weeks is a long time to be in hospital, but at least now you are home, and have people around you that love you and will help you with the healing process. It’s nice to see you back. 🙂

    1. It was kind of strange that there was no one around as there usually are some kinds of passersby, but I’m just glad I made it home. It was a surreal experience. I am so grateful for your kind wishes. Thanks, Mags!

  9. You don’t suppose it was that crow do ya? He did look pretty mean and it was only a couple days after that you got injured…don’t look any more crows in the eye woman!!! 🙂

    1. I reckon it was the crow, Cathy. He hexed me. Hahaha. I think it’s funny both you and Deborah thought I was after a chimney pot shot. That is a classic. Thank goodness I didn’t have my camera with me – it would have been smashed up. That would have upset me more than my leg being smashed up. I am cracking up about the connection between hospitals and Walmart. You are so right 😉

  22. Sel, I’m just so relieved you’re okay. I know what it’s like to have a severe physical injury, and have the adrenaline rushing through you so you don’t realize how severe it is. You poor thing. Be sure to eventually share your hospital stories with us. My guess is there’s quite a bit of fodder there for a tale or two… 🙂 xoxo

    1. It’s quite incredible, Steph, when that combination of adrenaline and shock hits you that you don’t feel anything. Very odd sensation. I have so many stories, Steph. People do chat in hospital – there’s not much else to do. Some people have been through so much. It has put my life in perspective, I can tell you.

(In all seriousness, I’m glad you’re okay. Please don’t go beating up anymore walls for a while.)

    1. BUSTED!!!! I can’t hide anything from you, can I? Doctor Demento was trying to take over the world – again. I had to stop him even if it meant personal injury. I promise not to beat up any more walls….

  24. OMG! It really is like a scene from one of your Zombie horror stories! Shock is like that. It can make people walk pain-free with a tree-limb sticking out of their head. So glad it wasn’t worse, because in one of your stories it would have been worse. You are so lucky you got home before passing out. Dear, dear Selma! Get well soon.

    1. Zombies were the only thing missing from the horrible scene, Squirrel. It did occur to me at the time that it was like one of my stories. It was funny and unnerving at the same time because I did think there was a possibility of a not so happy ending. I felt like a storybook character come to life. Think I’ll stick to writing romances from now on 😆
