Last Time For This Year

Amazing to think that tomorrow will be the last day of 2011, isn’t it? How did that year go by so quickly?

I thought I’d share with you some of the photos I have encountered on my walks around the neighbourhood, lately, and what they made me think about.

How gorgeous is this? Look at the waterfall and the contours on the rocks. Some of the street artists around here are very talented. If I was a poet this type of scene would inspire me to write a haiku, but sadly, my poetic skills are lacking and the closest I can come is a very bad limerick….

A lot of people tell me this bakery is very good but every time I see the sign for some reason I think of Sweeney Todd and how the victims were put in the pies and I wonder what this bakery is putting in the cakes. It seems like a bakery that would exist in a Stephen King novel, so I think I might pass on it for now.

Beautiful blooms brightening up the street. The local council plant them. You can’t help but smile when you see them.

How sexy is this graffiti girl? Look at the lips and the eyes. She’s painted on a door. I bet a lot of people wish they could open the door and there she’d be, for real. Is it just me or is she really hot?

What is it with me and birds? This duck looks like he wants to kill me. If you click on the photo it will enlarge and you will see the glaring intent in his eyes. First it was the crow and now it’s the duck. I feel like I’m in an Alfred Hitchcock movie….

I like the city skyline taken here from Blackwattle Bay. It is all blue and gorgeous. Hail to thee fair Sydney!

This is probably my favourite boat on the bay at the moment. I love the shape of it, the colours, the size. It seems to invite stories about sailing alongside dolphins and going to the best spots to catch the sunlight on the water.

I had to have a sunset for the final shot. This shot has it all – the water, the light shining through the clouds, the fading hues of evening, and of course, CRANES. Who could ask for anything more?

Thank you for coming with me on my walks this year and for indulging me in my quirky, photographic observations. It’s been fun for me. I hope it has for you too.

  1. Awesome photos. She is pretty hot that graffiti girl (a bit Bacall) 😉 That duck is actually looking at you with wisdom and determination and wishing you well (unlike the crow which was really out to get you) – haha. Let’s crack the virtual champers tomorrow night and I’ll throw in some virtual fireworks as well (at least they are not illegal) and here’s to 2012.

    1. Thanks for the reassurance about the duck, Gabe, I was beginning to get paranoid. I will be cracking the virtual champers tonight and maybe having some other virtual substances too (not illegal or mind-altering if they are virtual) and hoping, hoping, HOPING 2012 will be an easier year for all of us. Onwards and upwards…….

Oh and yes, she is a bit Bacall….

  2. Great photos, and you are a wonderful poet no matter what you say. I am not familiar with Sweeny Todd, but your referencing to the title sign reminds me of the movie “Fried Green Tomatoes” ( maybe they borrowed the theme from Sweeny)? Anyway, oh, and by the way, Whistle Stop, the township featured in the movie “Fried Green Tomatoes” is fictional, but, the place it was filmed in Georgia is like 10 minutes from my moms house. It actually borders Greg Allmans ranch…Happy New Year…Bless You

    1. I know Fried Green Tomatoes. It’s a great movie. WOW. I would be totally starstruck if I lived near Greg Allman. I am a HUGE Allman Brothers fan. How exciting.

Hope you have a wonderful New Year, Paul. All the best to you.

  3. Hi Selma,
Great photos, but I love the waterfall painting the best, it really is brilliant.
This year seemed to go really fast for me as well, I find as I get older the years are getting shorter. 😀

    1. I can see from your avatar that you are fond of waterfalls, Mags. I am too. I think they would be quite difficult to paint. One day I hope to get the chance to see Niagara Falls. I’ve heard they are spectacular.

I’ve found the years have sped up lately too. They are just whizzing by. Hope you have a wonderful New Year xxx

  4. Your birds make me nervous, lady. At least the glary, pale-eyed ones. And the girl on the door is hot (AND would make a lovely short story, yes? hinthint)

Love you so and hope the new year brings you a feast of fat things.

    1. I love you too, Ms Heather. I really do. You bring in the light. I do like that girl on the door and you’re right, she would make a good short story. I’ll just need to figure out how I’ll weave her in to one….

I hope the New Year brings you a lot of joy and satisfaction and delicious sugar-cookie-filled dreams coming true. Love you heaps xxxx

  5. “Sweeney Todd” – haha, you have the wildest imagination, Selma 😀
Great photies to finish off the year (and , yes, it does seem that the birds of Blackwattle Bay have got it in for you…)

Enjoy the fireworks tonight – you have the perfect spot from your neighbourhood – not too smoky 🙂

    Cheers, Selma!

    1. I just don’t know what to think about those birds, Bluebee. It is slightly unsettling….

I hope you get to enjoy the fireworks too. People are already parking in our street to go down to the park. It’s only noon and it’s raining. Now that’s what I call keen.

Have a fantasamagorical New Year, Bluebee. I have really enjoyed hanging out with you online this year. xxxxx

    1. Hahaha. I love it. He definitely was the Elvis of ducks, Tipota. Maybe I should go back to the pond and get his approval on the photo. Heehee.
Hope you have a wonderful New Year. Thank you for all your amazing artwork and poetry in ’11. I have really enjoyed it!

  7. Yikes, yes, watch those angry ducks Selma. The ones here just about charge our car when we visit a park about an hour from here to feed them bread. In the summer, they are fat and happy with all the kids feeding them, but the winters are a different story.

Anyway, I hope you and your family have a nice New Year.

    1. Some of them do charge, for sure. Geese are the worst. I try and avoid them because they can get really vicious and will actually chase you. Yikes.
Hope you and your family have an awesome New Year xxx

  8. Bwahaha, Selma. As always, I adore your photo’s! That bird is considering whether to liike you – or not! He has a serious look in his eyes, not malevolent though. The girl, on the other hand is so hot she’s smoking, lol! Skylnes always appeal to me as do clouds – always so moody. Wishing you everything you wish for in the new year. Bless you.

    1. Isn’t that girl hot? I don’t know if she’s based on anyone in particular but I was struck by how attractive she was and how well drawn. I would love to know who inspired her.

Have a wonderful New Year, Adee. It has been a pleasure for me to read your work in 2011.

  10. I love to take walks with you. I’m still at the point where I’m accepting winter on my side of the planet, but I see your photos of flowers and my heart lurches a little.

Yesterday I posted a picture of a crane and one of my twitter/blogger pals commented saying how she loves them. I told her she wasn’t my only friend who thought so!

Love the bakery sign and your thoughts on it! 🙂

    1. I saw the crane last night, Jen, and had a little laugh. I am coming back in a minute to comment – got distracted last night. Obviously, cranes have a mass appeal. I’m not surprised. I could watch them all day!
