Seeing The Day

Out and about again. Seeing lots of pretty things, lots of fun things. For the most part I tend to follow the same routes on my walks. People say to me :  Don’t you run out of things to see?  but the truth is I never do. There is always something new to see.

Like this rose.

There it was. A single, red rose planted against the dullness of the bark. It reminds me of the lipstick the Hollywood starlets used to wear in the 1940s. As a result I have decided to call this rose Rita after Rita Hayworth. I think she’s gorgeous.

I saw this bird sitting on the wire. I thought he looked cute with his little black face.

He’s a Black-faced Cuckoo Shrike. Quite an inquisitive little guy.

I saw these two guys sitting outside what looks like an abandoned house but which I think is actually NOT an abandoned house because the cats are always there and look very well fed. And they are very territorial. Even with people.

They eyeball you when you get too close. They are the gangsta cats.

I don’t know if I’ve ever told you but I love Shop names, especially old style names like Pots Aplenty, Mountains of Books and so on where there is a suggestion that there are heaps and heaps of the products being sold available. I also like names that leave you in no doubt as to what is being sold. Like this one.

Straight to the point and obviously well stocked. That is what I call superlative marketing.

I often walk past the grounds of this church and although I am not really of a church-ey persuasion I can’t help but be moved by the statue of Mary nestled among the greenery. Everyone who walks past this statue looks at it and can feel the serenity. I have seen it.

It is a very peaceful spot. Even the cynics among us feel it.

Finally, the other day I was carrying on like a teenager who has just written a batch of really bad, angsty poetry; saying things like – My life sucks, I’m sick of it all, Nobody has to put up with the crap I have to put up with – and other related dummy spits; when what should I see out of the window but this?

DEAL. As in DEAL WITH IT. Stop your carrying on. Quit blubbering and get on with it. Sometimes I am freaked out by the signs the powers that be leave for me. I mean, messages in the sky? Whatever will be next?

So nice of you to see the day with me.

  1. That sign in the sky is freaky–just like George Washington, eh? (Thanks for the “fave”)

Did you see Rita Hayworth in Gilda? What a film, and what a role for her.
Nice to see you are out and about more!

    1. My pleasure about the fave. I love your chip art. It is utterly hilarious. Gilda was a fabulous film. Rita Hayworth really was a true femme fatale in it. Totally hot!!

  2. Hi Selma,
Fantastic photos, I love the rose, such a beautiful deep red, and I agree with you about the statue, it does look very nice sitting there amongst all the greenery. 🙂

  3. What next? “Suck it up” appearing on your steamed-up bathroom mirror?! Such an enjoyable post, Selma 😀 And I love that cat photo

    1. I wouldn’t be surprised if that did appear on my bathroom mirror, Bluebee. I suppose it would be better than something that said – You are going to die – *insert spooky horror film music here*

Actually, that would make a great start to a horror story, wouldn’t it? I might just have to write it. Haha.

  5. The answers are always there – just have to look for them (and being a terrific observer – you find them). The catholic church where my Mum used to go to mass had a statue of Mary just like that one and it always made me feel good driving past (had a similar one at school – I always had a thing for Our Lady more than the other three 😉 – now I’ll be struck by lightning). But one sad day I drove past and the statue was gone – some idiots had gone in and smashed it to pieces 😦 probably thinking it was funny. They’ve never replaced the statue.

    1. That’s awful that someone would destroy a statue that obviously gave so many people solace. It’s so senseless. It’s so sad it was never replaced. I bet a lot of people miss it. I don’t get some people, Gabe. I really don’t 😕

  6. Oh! Every picture unique and wonderful! The red rose was stunning and “DEAL”… wow, I would say the universe was trying to tell you something. That really made me smile, rather hard to ignore the message, huh? 🙂 Lovely walk, truely lovely! I could easily enjoy taking a “walk” like this with you everyday, and I don’t even have to put on shoes! 🙂

    1. Can you believe DEAL was written in the sky, Josie? I nearly fell over. I love that you can come on a walk with me. I enjoy it very much!!!

  7. I love going for walks with you Selma. I’m so glad you take your camera along (I never run out of things to see either.) LOVE the sign in the sky!

    1. If you and I happened to go walking together, Jen, we’d be out all day with all the things we saw. Now THAT would be a good time. The sign in the sky freaked me out!!

  8. I have a rose almost exactly like that in my garden … it’s called a ‘Royal William’; I think was named after Prince William, but when my grandson is a little older, I think I’ll tell him it was named after him!

Shop names … probably the worst are hairdressers … a friend and I are collecting them; stuff like ‘Headquarters’, ‘The Clip Joint’ and ‘Herr Kutz’

(I usually have my hair cut at Giuseppe’s … but he tells me he’s looking for a more catchy name)

    1. You’re right – hairdressers usually have pretty funny (and often cheesy) names. That is so cute about your grandson’s rose. He’ll love that!

  9. I love it when you take me with you on your walks. You remind me to open my eyes and just LOOK. I sometimes forget.

I love the rose and the gangstas. As for the “sign,” I think you got it when the Fates pushed you off that wall.

    1. Yes. Patti, you are so right. I love how you refer to them as the Fates. Makes the whole experience seem somewhat otherworldly and significant. The gangsta cats are funny but I wouldn’t mess with them 😯

  10. Really great images, Selma! We do that, too, take so many walks all around, two or three or more times a day. Always on the look out for the cool and off beat signs … stopping at all our “stations of the rest” along the way. We are huge people watchers so there’s always lots to see.

  11. Hi Selma
just lost the comment I left whilst trying to post a pic I took on meandering through our beloved local park here in Glasgow, Scotland, UK where people have a zany sense of humour – the pic is called Extreme Knitting and shows a two foot caterpillar of vivid purple knitting crawling up a black railing. (Just had an idea! My next post will consist of a zany picture and an invite to write 100 words of flash fiction around it. Like that?)

I enjoyed this post, and your reminder that our familiar beats always hold something special if we just keep our eyes open. Thanks!

    1. I love that, Anne. That sounds like so much fun. I’ve seen some of that knitting around here – I think they call it yarn bombing – and it is always quite hilarious. Count me in for the flash fiction!!

  13. This was such a beautiful post with such great pics. The one with the red rose was mind blowing. Such deep shade of red. I loved the statue of Mother Mary. I wish I could hug her.

    1. The statue is a beautiful one, Childwoman. Very, very serene. I feel the power of it as I walk by. I can’t explain it, but I feel it. I love the red of that rose too. So deep!
